Chromite (Chrome Ore), iron magnesium chromium oxide : (Fe, Mg)Cr2O4, is an oxide mineral belonging to the spinel group. Magnesium is always present in variable amounts, also aluminium and iron substitute for chromium(chrome ore). Chromite color is brownish black to a deep dark black, hardness is 5.5 and owns weakly magnetic and an octahedral parting.
The only ore of chromium is the mineral chromite(Chrome Ore). In the western hemisphere, chromite ore is produced only in Brazil and Cuba; By comparison, about 80% of world production of chromite (Chrome Ore) comes from India, Iran, Pakistan, Oman, Zimbabwe, Turkey and Southern Africa. Southern Africa itself produces about half of this.
The Uses of Chromite (Chrome Ore)
The only ore of chromium is the mineral chromite (chrome ore) . The two main products of chromite refining are ferrochromium and metallic chromium, for those products the ore smelter process differs considerably. For the production of ferrochromium the chromite ore is reduced with either aluminium or silicon in a aluminothermic reaction and for the production of pure chromium the iron has to be separated from the chromium in a two step roasting and leaching process.
Chromite (Chrome Ore) is also used as a refractory material, because it has a high heat stability.
